They have criticized and attacked our own values, ASL and Deaf. They have also considered us as isolated and less human beings.

Well here it is! A Deaf boy is a student at the E.C. Drury School for the Deaf in Milton Ontario Canada. The school has provided Deaf students Bi/Bi program. The boy is one of the 12 Ontario Junior Citizens of the Year by the Ontario Community Newspapers Association.

Now it has shown that many ignorants and audists have failed to recognize ASL as a language and Deaf as a human being. He argues that ASL and English are not compatible due to their differences. They are like orange and apple. Other people have supported his argument and at the same time they would like to have Deafblind and people with Usher’s syndrome involved in Deafread.

Others have argued that Deafblind and people with Usher’s syndrome have every right to read subtitles and transcripts. Some of them have criticized Deaf people for oppressing Deafblind and people with Usher’s syndrome.

One person has a recommendation that ASL video clip and transcript can be used rather than ASL video clip with subtitles. The main reason is that Deafblind (totally blind or impossible to read or see) could not read subtitles that the Braille system could not translate. I think transcript is the best solution for everyone and the Braille system can translate it and even voice system can do that too. ASLan just discovered video format that can enlarge picture of video for people with Usher's syndrome. It is one of solutions. I am gonna ask Kevin (ASLan) to get one.

There are two separate languages (ASL video clip and transcript in English) that can be provided for everyone. But I must emphasize taht both of them are not the same in concept. For example this transcript I wrote is not exact like my video clip article but similar idea. I want to emphasize taht ASL is my primary language and English is my secondary language.

Some may not write transcript at all. Some may write summary transcript and others may write full transcript. I made subtitle on my video clip (Put ASL Above AGBAD – Come On). It took me hours to finish it. I was informed it was good. Then I decided to try other video clips and know what, it was impossible for me to make subtitles on them because of language complication. Too much for me to work on that for many hours but at the same time I don’t want to give up for Deafblind and people with usher’s syndrome.

I just discovered that translating ASL into English is far too tough if not impossible. It takes a huge amount of time to work on it. I think Carl was trying to point it out. It is so much easier for people to translate spoken English into written English. “From spoken word to written word”

I do not agree with Mike McConnell’s comments that stated Deaf oppress Deaf. I want to challenge him that he stated that he preferred to speak rather than sign. I understand that is his choice. But I want to ask him if he is aware that he was actually oppressing Deaf by denying them ASL. In my view, he does not provide accessibility for some Deaf people even though Mike claims he knows ASL. Why not use ASL? I find that ironic.

I think it is unfair to criticize Deaf people for not providing accessibility for others. Deaf people are working very hard to do their best. We all want to have Deafblind and people with Usher’s syndrome involved somehow.

We want to understand their needs and we want to find a solution for everyone. I know not all vloggers can do that for various reasons such as language challenges. We need to work together to find a creative solution. If we continue to criticize among us, it will hurt us all. We all don’t deserve that.

Please remember I do not represent Deafblind and people with Usher's syndrome. I may be wrong and I am more than happy to be corrected.

We can work together as a team and be creative!

Deafchip

Enough of CI Discussion! It seems that there are no formal medical ethics for deaf babies and children.

Children with BiBi - ASL (receptive and expressive) and English (read and write - some with speech and listen) are in safety net.

Children with AVT only (prohibited children from ASL) are NOT in safety net. They do not have any back up plan at all and the children are put in a very dangerous journey. Unfortunately, many of them have not mastered their AVT skills. Many parents always have high hope for their own children (outweigh risk). I do not blame parents but I accuse AVT professionals of manipulating parents into false world of hope rather than allowing them to see reality of risk. Many of them do not realize that their children may dread them for putting them in high risk of life. They do not realize that it is not only about language but also phyiscal, mental, emotional and spiritual.

Can you discuss with us about that? Have you seen any medical ethics about deaf? If so, please share with us. But I am glad it is almost over and thank God my insurance covered it all.

Anyway back to the point, as a Canadian, I have watched all shows of demonstration at the AGBad conference. I thought it was excellent. I am very pleased that the leadership of John E, David E, Barb DiGi and others is very proactive. I believe Deaf Bilingual Coalition is a great movement to promote positive message of BiBi.

I am very pleased to find out that DBC is going to be an offical organization.

Now I am asking you, John Egbert, a question, is it only for USA or North America or international? We just need to know. Of course we respect the decision of DBC committee or Board.

In Canada, we have fought against the same AVT philosophy. I thought it would be great for us to work together to combat it.

In Ontario, we got our Ontario government's attention and the government has agreed to work with OAD, "Ontario Association of the Deaf" and parents organization to meet some of demands.

Deafchip

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://deafchipmunk.blogspot.com/2007/08/clarification-is-deaf-bilingual.html' title='Is Deaf Bilingual Coalition a national organization? I want to correct some error information about Canada.
This is not correct about around 90 percent of deaf Canadians are oralists. We stated that around 90 percent of deaf pupils have started in AVT/non signing program but gradually, deaf pupils/students start to learn sign language. In their adulthood, a large majority of them use sign language. That is what we are trying to inform Ministries of Education (each provincial government) about the fact.

I got from CIA - The World Factbook, it states:
Economy - overview:
As an affluent, high-tech industrial society in the trillion-dollar class, Canada resembles the US in its market-oriented economic system, pattern of production, and affluent living standards. Since World War II, the impressive growth of the manufacturing, mining, and service sectors has transformed the nation from a largely rural economy into one primarily industrial and urban. The 1989 US-Canada Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) (which includes Mexico) touched off a dramatic increase in trade and economic integration with the US. Given its great natural resources, skilled labor force, and modern capital plant, Canada enjoys solid economic prospects. Top-notch fiscal management has produced consecutive balanced budgets since 1997, although public debate continues over how to manage the rising cost of the publicly funded healthcare system. Exports account for roughly a third of GDP. Canada enjoys a substantial trade surplus with its principal trading partner, the US, which absorbs about 85% of Canadian exports. Canada is the US' largest foreign supplier of energy, including oil, gas, uranium, and electric power.

CIA FACTBOOK

Deafchip

Are Butterflies DEAF?

A couple of years ago, I found out that almost all of butterflies are deaf! There will be second reading. It is sponsored by MPP Ernie Parsons (Member of Provincial Parliament of Ontario and he represents riding where Ontario School for the Deaf (Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf) is. We hope the third reading will carry just before this summer because there will be provincial election in the fall. If the third reading carries, it will be signed into the law ( it will receive Royal Assent) by Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. We very much hope it will happen.

Please read below "posted by Legislative Assembly of Ontario"

Bill 213 2007

An Act to recognize sign language as an official language in Ontario

Preamble

Sign language is the language of the deaf community of Ontario. It is the first language of a large number of members of Ontario’s deaf community and it is integral to the culture of the deaf community in Ontario and to its linguistic integrity.

It is appropriate for Ontario to recognize the importance of sign language and, therefore, to extend official language status to sign language in the courts, in education and in the Legislative Assembly. The respect that Ontario affords to sign language demonstrates Ontario’s commitment to the recognition of the fundamental human rights of the members of Ontario’s deaf community and to the recognition of the deaf community as a distinct cultural-linguistic society.

Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

Definitions

1. In this Act,

“Commission” means the Sign Language Commission of Ontario established under subsection 5 (1); (“Commission”)

“sign language” includes American Sign Language, Langue des Signes Quebecoise and First Nation Sign Language. (“langue des signes”)

Use of sign language

2. The Government of Ontario shall ensure that sign language may be used in the courts, in education and in the Legislative Assembly.

Existing practice protected

3. This Act shall not be construed to limit the use of sign language outside of the application of this Act.

Limitation of obligation

4. The obligations of the government, of educational institutions and of the Legislative Assembly under this Act are subject to such limits as circumstances make reasonable and necessary, if all reasonable measures and plans for compliance with this Act have been taken or made.

Commission

5. (1) There shall be established a commission known as the Sign Language Commission of Ontario in English and the Commission ontarienne de la langue des signes in French.

Purposes

(2) The purposes of the Commission are:

1. To advise the Government of Ontario in all matters related to sign language.

2. To support research into sign language.

3. To support the development of sign language.

4. To undertake such other activities as may be assigned to it by the Government of Ontario.

Funding of research

6. The Lieutenant Governor in Council may authorize the funding of research into the use and development of sign language out of funds appropriated for those purposes by the Legislative Assembly.

Commencement

7. This Act comes into force 180 days after the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

8. The short title of this Act is the Recognition of Sign Language as an Official Language Act, 2007.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Bill recognizes sign language as an official language in Ontario in the courts, in education and in the Legislative Assembly.

A G Bell's House and My House

My home was just near A. They are very important part of our group. My only argument is about the term of "deaf mute" itself. This is what I want to clarify.

It is very much like Track and Field Relay. Deafmute gave relay bar to Deaf (Culture) or signing Deaf and let Deafmute rest in our own history. Nothing more and nothing less. Deaf (with capital "D") is our cultural identity and let us move on.

Let you know I just ordered a "Deafhood" book and I look forward to reading it very soon. I read some of it in internet. It looks interesting and I was told that it is very positive. Some disagreed with it. But i am open minded guy with no "yes sir to anything". If I find it rational, then I will accept. If not, I will disagree.

Thanks

Deafchip
<img width='1' height='1'

Discussion about Deaf Mute and Deaf Culture.

I want to clarify my comment that I made in this video clip.

I have never meant to reject people who called themselves, "Deafmute" from Deaf Culture. They are ACTUALLY part of Deaf Culture. The only argument I have made is about the term of "Deaf Mute". I have always believed they are "SIGNING DEAF" who have carried and preserved our sign language and values through bad and good times.

In the past, Deaf community agreed to remove the term of "mute". I feel we must respect their wisdom.
